The European Union doesn’t recognize constitutional and legal framework of elections in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Foreign Minister of Lithuania Audronius Azubalis has told the statement while commenting on Armenia’s holding “presidential elections” on Azerbaijan’s occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region on 19 July, Gun.Az reported.
According to him, this event hampers the peaceful settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
“Therefore, more efforts should be exerted to reach consensus in accordance with the Madrid principles.”
The minister noted that Lithuania has closely cooperated with the OSCE Minsk Group cochairmen and prevented the aggravation of the unstable situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
“Today we fully support cooperation with chairmen of OSCE Minsk Group, the main format of negotiations. There is no alternative option for peaceful settlement of the conflict. Force and status quo doesn’t help in this protracted conflict.”
Azubalis voiced concern over the recent aggravation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
“Investigation of these incidents shows the importance of OSCE proposal mechanism. Simple practical steps such as withdrawal of snipers from the frontline and restoration of rational mechanism of investigation could calm down the tension in relations.”
The Lithuanian foreign minister is sure that consolidation of EU’s relations with the three countries of the region can bring new prospects for settlement of the conflict.
